LeGant was not an independent watch manufacturer but a private-label watch brand created for the American department store Montgomery Ward, which sold the watches in its mail-order catalogs and retail outlets mainly in the 1960s and 1970s. The name—likely a play on the word “elegant”—was used on watches that were made under contract by established Swiss and later Japanese makers, featured Swiss movements and were often cased and finished in Europe for the U.S. market.
Some higher-end LeGant chronographs of the 1960s were built with quality Swiss movements from firms such as Zenith and Valjoux for Montgomery Ward, even though the brand itself didn’t manufacture movements or cases. In the early 1990s the LeGant trademark was sold to Seiko and used on watches with Japanese movements before production eventually ceased, leaving LeGant today primarily as a vintage collector’s name rather than an active watch brand.
This particular tonneau chronograph, powered by a Valjoux 7736, featured an exuberant exotic dial and an original box. In late 2025, this watch was minutely disassembled, cleaned, and serviced by Los Angeles Watchworks, ensuring it operates perfectly for generations to come. A period-correct LeGant box is supplied with the watch, as it would have had in the 1970’s.
