While it may seem like a relatively new brand, Gevril’s roots trace back to 1721 in La Chaux-de-Fonds, when Jacques Gevril became the first exporter of Swiss timepieces to Spain along with his friend, Pierre Jaquet-Droz —eventually becoming official suppliers to the Spanish Crown in 1758. Since then, the brand has gone through short bursts of splendor, followed by a slow decline until 2001, when it was purchased by Lugano-born impresario Samuel Friedmann. Under his leadership, Gevril relocated to New York, while keeping their atelier in Switzerland.
Arguably Gevril’s best-known model, the Tribeca is an unapologetic homage to the Rolex Daytona 6263 ‘Paul Newman’. While keeping the original 37mm case size and dial proportions, it still retains top-quality detail and robust Swiss movements. The Tribeca was made in two series of 500 watches each, and it is considered by many to be the best ‘Paul Newman’ homage watch available anywhere —the watch of choice for actual 6263 Daytona owners to use without guilt.
This particular watch is #006 out of the second series of 500 watches. As opposed to the first series, these Tribecas have an automatic Sellita SW510A movement with the correct 6263 sub-dial placement. Still preserved by its protective plastics, this is a brand new watch accompanied with its original box and papers.
