Some cars need no introduction. Born from the W194 racer that conquered Le Mans and the Carrera Panamericana, the 300 SL brought the racetrack to the road in 1954 — the world’s first production car with direct fuel injection, and the fastest of its era. Its doors swing upward not for show, but because engineer Rudolf Uhlenhaut’s spaceframe chassis left no room for anything else. The result became one of the most recognisable silhouettes ever built.

This example left the factory finished in Dark Grey (DB190) over its rare tartan-fabric interior, shipped new to the United States in October 1954.

More remarkably is what’s happened since: a complete, ground-up restoration by Mercedes-Benz. Full body and paintwork, re-trimmed interior, engine-out mechanical rebuild, and every seal, gasket, and system gone through — nothing was left untouched.

With just 1,247 km showing, this Gullwing doesn’t just survive. It’s been returned, exactly as it left Sindelfingen.
