The Michelin Man, or Bibendum, is a French cultural icon. Penned in 1898 by cartoonist O’Galop (Marius Roussillon) as a regal character born out of a stack of white tyres, this highly recognizable fellow still remains the main mascot of the Michelin tyre company until this day.
A French corporation since the late 19th Century, Michelin always been at the forefront of tyre technology, with developments like the run-flat tyre and radial construction. The Michelin Guide, originally conceived as a way to motivate the French people to drive all over the country, has now become the single best restaurant rating on the planet.
This bakelite Bibendum ashtray dates from the late 1950’s to the early 1960’s, and is in exceptionally good condition, not showing any signs of use.
