While little known, the 1981 Dubai Grand Prix was an event commissioned by Sheikh Rashid Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, father of the current ruler of Dubai, to bring an all-star cast of racing drivers to Dubai and put the city’s name on the map during the UAE’s 10th anniversary after independence.
Racers of the caliber of Stirling Moss, Jack Brabham, John Surtees, Denny Hulme, John Watson, Nigel Mansell, Keke Rosberg, Brian Henton, or Juan Manuel Fangio traveled to the up-and-coming Emirati city to compete in a street circuit designed specifically for the occasion.
