How do you follow up a classic? Especially when you are talking about a classic Porsche, and nothing less than the G-model of 1973-1989? The pressure is intense. And yet, as we’ve come to expect from Stuttgart, Porsche pulled it off with the brilliant 964, a sportscar that took the 911 into the modern era.

In nearly every way, it was a significant upgrade over the earlier model, including luxuries like power steering, safety essentials like ABS, and modern coil springs and shocks instead of outdated torsion bars. The dawn of aerodynamics meant you could now have your 911 with a electronically retractable spoiler, while this was also the first 911 to feature dual airbags and climate control.

With this burgeoning list of creature comforts, it’s no wonder that the type-964 was a monumental success, with more than 60,000 units built between 1989 and 1993. Of all the many variants produced, it’s the Turbo that saw the greatest leaps in the shortest time. Launched initially with the 930-generation 3.3-litre 316bhp engine, the model saw continuous improvement resulting in this ultimate version, the 3.6-litre Turbo of ’93-’94. Less than 1,500 of these vehicles were produced, and with a star turn in 1995’s Bad Boys film starring Will Smith, its desirability has never waned.
