Harley-Davidson VIN number 59XLCH2148 has undergone restoration from October 2006 to October of 2007. This restoration was completed by Yesterday’s Cycle Restoration Company of Topeka, Kansas, in the United States of America. The restoration process was completed with as many original parts as possible, some of which include: carburetor, high pipe exhaust system, restored original speedometer, magneto ignition system, paint restoration to original colour, layout and decals, original “speedster” style 2 piece handlebars. Only quality reproduction reproduction parts have been used when necessary/appropriate/no original parts where available.
The restoration process began with disassembly to the frame for complete media blast cleaning in preparation of priming and painting. The engine was disassembled, inspected and rebuilt as needed. Engine details include media blasting of the crankcases for the correct sand cast texture finish and the use of Harley-Davidson high temperature engine paint applied to the heads & cylinders. The transmission, clutch and primary components include original rear shocks and rebuilt original front forks with new fork tubes installed.
Close attention has been concentrated on original finishes for the restoration of this machine. Finish types utilised are parkerising, zinc plating and chrome plating. The finishes were applied to hardware fasteners and components as to accurately reproduce the original production finishes. For additional durability the fuel tank has been coated internally to seal out rust and protect from the corrosiveness of fuel/fuel additives.
Near completion and before delivery the motorcycle was started and test-ridden to ensure all systems functioned as expected. The test ride was completed with a different exhaust system as to protect the new chrome finish on the restored original exhaust from any blueing effects from run-in.
