Established in 1926 in Grenchen, Switzerland, Nivada is one of the first Swiss manufacturers to produce automatic wristwatches for the mass market, with models such as the Antartic (1958), the Chronomaster (1961), and the Depthomatic (1964). In the 1960’s, the brand had to rename its watches to Nivada Grenchen due to its phonetic similarity to Movado; in the United States, Nivada was sold under Croton (sometimes as Croton Nivada), and in South Korea, the name changed to Kim Suk Keun Watch Company until the 2000’s. At the turn of the Millenium, the brand was purchased by Grupo Salinas, an investment conglomerate from Mexico, in an effort to breathe new life into the nearly century-old brand.
Inspired closely by the Chronomaster designs of the 1960’s and the 1970’s, Nivada Grechen released a limited edition within a window of five weeks between July and August of 2023. The Valjoux 72 movement is replaced with a reliable Seiko Mechaquartz movement, while still preserving the ‘Paul Newman’ dial of the original, with the iconic art déco numerals by Jean Singer.
This particular watch is brand new and never worn, and comes with its original box, label and papers as it did when new.
